Spinderella's Fiber Mill- Spinning Prices

1640 South 600 East * Salt Lake City~ UT * 84105 * 801.668.0563

We process your raw fibers into custom spun yarn. Though many companies charge based on incoming weight, from start to finish, we separate the cost for washing and spinning differently. We feel this is the only fair way to charge you, as we have no idea what will be lost in washing, tumbling and carding. If you have washed your fibers, you will be charged the spinning charge only if they are clean enough for spinning. Fibers for spinning need to be extremely clean and most times we have to rewash. Washing them yourself will save on shipping.

MINIMUM CHARGE PER FLEECE IS TWO (2) POUNDS

*Please understand that we can process less then 2 pounds per fiber run, but you will be charged for 2 pounds. A run is considered one fleece or one batch. If you send 10 pounds of 1 pound fleeces to be run separately, you will be charged for 20 pounds. Keep this in mind when you are sending fleeces and what you might want to blend to help with those minimum charges.*

Also note that there are times we are not able to spin your fibers without the addition of wool. We do have these fibers available for purchase.

Check out our Cost Estimator to see a rough estimate of what your order will cost.

Washing Your Fibers- Spinning prices do not include washing.

We charge the same base price for washing all fibers based on the incoming weight of your fiber. If your fibers require and extra wash or a few extra rinses to remove lanolin or dirt, we will add the charge to your bill and will note it on your invoice. Re-washing your fibers is also based on incoming weight and will be added to your invoice. Please check our washing instruction page to see how to wash your fleeces properly and save yourself the extra charges.

Washing Services - based on incoming weight of the fibers

Spinning Services - based on finished weight of the fibers

Includes carding, picking, if necessary, 2 ply yarn, skeining and steaming of yarn

We will spin to your specifications. We add an additional 10% to yardage when skeining to allow for the draw up when steaming, which is done withou tension. So you may have a few extra/fewer yards per skein. For example 250 yard skeins are wound off at 270 yards, to allow for 27 yard loss in steaming.
Note: See Extra Services for *Suri and Mohair

Volume Discounts

Discounts will be figured on finished weight of fibers and applied to the whole order
Our discounts apply to a cumulative weight - if you send 5 fleeces run separately and the finished weight is more than 20 pounds - you will receive the discount. This can be a mix of carding and spinning.
Again- volume discounts DO NOT have to be all one run!

20 pounds to 49 pounds based on finished weight of order 10% off of the order
Over 50 pounds based on finished weight of order 15% off the order

Please read our page :

to read more about fiber losses during processing.

We use Fed Ex Home Shipping

We have made a few video's for you to watch on how we finish your yarns- they are steamed and dried before packaging. We then wind them into very large bumps for easier shipping and weighing. If you don't know how to make a skein of yarn- watch the last video in this series.

Lynn and our grandson Jarron, really enjoy steaming the yarns as they are really fun to watch squiggle into place! :0)

A word about Twist

Twist in yarn is a very interesting thing. You need to have enough twist in a yarn to hold together without feeling like rope, unless of course that is what you want. Twist is an active thing. Yarns are full of energy, moving all the time. It may be dormant and stabilized but, by fibers nature, it is always active. If given the right set of conditions it will relax and untwist.

We set the twist in your yarns by steaming them. We hang them to dry , under no weight, as we know this will not do anything for a "real" finish in your yarns. Jim works very hard at making sure your yarn is correctly spun. He tests the yarns as he spins to insure the yarn has the right amount of twist in the singles to hold together as well as keeping it soft and subtle. Steaming is the way we "bloom" the yarns- allowing the fibers to relax to their natural state and redistribute the energy over the length of the skein. We do see a difference in the yardage - about 6 inches, depending on the fibers, but we allow for this in the skeining process.

Know that setting the twist permanently is simply not possible. It is only possible to balance it or to control it on a temporary basis, but spinning a balanced yarn in the 1st place helps a great deal.

NOTE: if you want your yarn spun for a weaving warp- let us know and we will block the yarn for you if we wash it, if it is steamed only- we will weight it as we steam it, but it is not the same as washing and blocking to dry.

We are very proud of the work Jim does- we entered some skeins that he spun and were tickled that they won some pretty ribbons.... Take a look!

A note on your yarns.

We bundle your yarn in one (1) pound skeins- there are many skeins in one of these skeins, based on the weight of the yarn. These are easier to ship and also easier for you to wash once they arrive.

for washing - we suggest HOT water and a small amount of your detergent. Let the large skein soak about 15 minutes then rinse in HOT water. This removes all the left over spinning oils and you will be surprised how much your yarns will blossom. Rinse 5-10 minutes then take these large skeins to the spin cycle of your washer Spin the excess water out of the skeins. Now unwrap the big skeins and hang over a rod to dry, making sure to separate each regular skein for faster drying. Use or reskein!
